Englehard Premium?

I'm new at this, But why is a premium on Englehard silver rounds?

Re: Englehard Premium?

I just looked and discovered around a spot + $1.00 on Engelhard 1 oz bars. That's more than has been usual, about double, but it reflects the realities of the market. A lot of people want them and the sellers can get that much.

I note that the Apmex premium for Krugs has dropped from spot + $20 to spot + $15 and they are now offering only spot to purchase Krugs from the public compared to spot + $10 just a couple of weeks ago. This happened as the premium for silver products has climbed. I would guess that a lot of people are now placing their bets on silver.

Sometimes people will pay a preimuim for a well known (reliable) mint name like Engelhard. It depends on the dealer. I usually have paid regular round price for Engelhard or maybe +.20. To me they are just 1 oz of Ag not sure why people pay more and most rounds (at least the ones you should be buying if you are in the market) have the purity and wieght stamped on the round. And when I sold them I got -.80 so I don't see great value in paying a premium for a round, no matter the name. But that might change in the future if/when the price goes up for Ag people might think it worth trying to defraud by making counterfeits. IMO

I agree except it seems like when people start making counterfeits, they will counterfeit the most desired stuff, like engelhards. Wasn't it engelhards that were filled with lead last time around?

what she said!

I have seen some places selling them for a few dollars over spot. Check out ebay. They always sell for more.

I have two dealers that charge their regular spread for them. One always charges .25 over spot. Another one charges .50 over spot, and another one charges a dollar over spot.

Because they are name brands some people will pay more. And believe me I always buy the names when available i.e.
Englehard
Sunshine
there are a couple of others that escape me at the moment...

Re: Englehard Premium?

It may not be relevant to you but folks who are new to bullion frequently mistakenly believe that bullion items are offered at spot. A spot price on a bullion item is a deal...if it's an item you want grab it at this price.

The reason for premiums is that it costs money to produce, market, insure & transport bullion items sold in primary markets, but most items are purchased in secondary markets.

But regardless of whether purchased from a refinery or a down-wind dealer, everybody has to eat and pay bills and this in virtually all instances prohibits selling items at spot.

Even the U.S. and other government mints don't sell bullion items for spot.

Hope this helps.

Re: Englehard Premium?

:rolleyes_m: Englehard Prospector rounds have a large collector following of their own outside their basic bullion value.

I've saw premiums of $5.00 or more over spot price for certain Prospector dates on eBay and the buyers were going insane bidding up the price.

I remember one lucky? bidder gave something like $37.50 for a mint, sealed 1981? Prospector...he wanted it bad.

Johnson Matthey,Englehard, and A Mark are the prime collectors choice of silver bullion.

To my knowledge JM and Englehard no longer make commercial silver bars and rounds for the secondary market.
A MARK is still in business and sells their Liberty Bell silver rounds at a steep premium.

Most of the bullion dealers have got wise to the scarcity of older rounds and bar bullion from these three companies and charge premiums accordingly.
